Never Let the Passion Set on You: Music Video with Rob Riccardo

Rob is an amazing, mindful musician. He and I both chose to pursue our passions full time on January 1st 2018. On January 2nd Rob got booked for Warped Tour and later that month I landed my first major video job. Then we shot a music video together. We didn't know what we were stepping into but it's like Rob says in the video above:

When you think positively and you go toward it, amazing things open up when you’re on the path. That’s a reminder for me to never let the passion set on you again - go towards the light
— Rob Riccardo

Let's rewind a little bit. I (virtually) met Rob while my partner and I were on a surf trip in Portugal. We posted a photo on instagram from the break we were surfing, it popped up in his explore feed and he messaged us about how he always wanted to surf there. Once we started talking and listened to his music, we knew we had to be friends!

If you came up to me as I was posting this photo a year ago and told me I'd soon be fully self employed I would've laughed, scoffed politely and said "No way - that's not for me."

Well, a lot can change in a short amount of time. Through a recent series of transformative events I was shown many of my fears and self doubts. Including the one that held me back from believing that I could work for myself - "I'm not good enough."

What a relief.

No, it didn't feel good to look back and recognize all the times I held myself back. I try not to think too hard about what I missed. Instead I like to focus on how good it feels to know that I can finally get out of my own way, and start to believe in myself. So, with A LOT of encouragement from my family and friends (and a not-so-gentle nudge out of my day job) I launched my own business.

It turns out I'm not alone in feeling this way.

I can confidently say that most, if not all, of the business owners and entrepreneurs I work with experience some self doubt. Self doubt is not uncommon and each has their own way of handling it. What they all have in common is that they all handle it.

In one way or another they feel the fear and pursue their passion anyway.

I think that's the faith that Rob is describing in his song Running Towards the Sun, and that's why this song always helps lifts me up when those feeling of self doubt creep in.

I'd love to hear what you're passionate about and how you pursue it. And if you have a great method for dealing with self doubt - comment below or share it for my sake and anyone who may be reading :-)
